**NEW LAKEWOOD SIGNS
On September 4, 2009, the
residents of Lakewood Estates applied for a matching
Neighborhood Partnership grant to replace the wooden signs at
our entrances. The signs were once a handsome addition to our
neighborhood, but sun and rain have taken their toll, many of
them are faded or cracked, and the time has come to do
something more permanent.
The photo on this
page is an approximation of the final sign selected by the
membership at the September meeting. Our signs will be very
much like this one -- poured concrete, heavy and stable,
painted and lettered with the word Lakewood Estates
in dark green
The photo on this
page is from another neighborhood and is put here for
informational purposes only. Our signs will be something like
this one -- poured concrete, heavy and stable, painted and
lettered with a final design to be chosen by the membership.
As we move toward final design, we will post the progress here
and at the September, November and January meetings.
And because of the
high cost, we will be asking for only 4 signs, which are to be
placed at the main entrance off MLK at Country Club; on 54th
Avenue South in front of Country Club Villas; on 54th
Avenue South on the eastern corner of Caesar Way; and on 31st
Street on the southern corner of Desoto. All of these
locations presently have the old signs; the remaining 5 old
ones will be removed.
Because this is
a matching grant, Lakewood must come up with $9,780 in
donations, cash or “sweat equity,” meaning work at $20.00.
Even before we put in for the grant, 34 of your neighbors had
already signed up to help with the effort, and we hope more of
you will join in and be part of this special event as we move
toward installation. That should begin in early March of next
year.
And here is
something special. This is a photograph of inscribed pavers
used by another neighborhoods to raise cash for its signs.
The pavers will go in rows around the base of each sign, in as
many rows as we can fill, probably 4 rows, which will be 192
bricks, including any blank ones.
These bricks can be
inscribed with 3 lines of words, 12 words per line, including
spaces, and will cost $40.00. The cash will be used as part
of the matching grant. 16 of your neighbors have already
signed up for these pavers, which can contain your own names,
your kids’ names, names of loved ones, favorite pets’ names,
or even a nice message. It’s up to you.
We hope you will
come to the next 3 meetings so you can be kept informed about
this project and offer your views and thoughts. This is a
project for ALL of Lakewood – it is going to improve the image
we have to the outside world and help preserve our property
values and the Lakewood way of life.

Hazard Materials Collection Day *NEW
We have reserved October 17, 2009 with the City for a waste
collection dumpster that will be stationed from Friday of
that weekend through Sunday. If it fills up, the City will
drag it off and give us an empty one. Also on that site,
but only from 9 a.m. to noon on the 17th will be a County
hazardous materials collection dumpster for paint,
electronics, telephones, anything you can't put into regular
trash collection. Remember: There will be no
city-sponsored clean-up day in 2010, so start thinking now
about taking advantage of this service.
