Florida Statute 316.3045 forbids car stereo noise that is audible at more
than 25’ from the car. The City of St. Petersburg allows you to report
violators of this law by completing a complaint form with the car tag number
and any other identifying information. The form is sent to the City either
in the form of a postcard or by going online to the City of St. Petersburg
Police Department and clicking on Report a Loud Car Stereo Violation.
When the information reaches the Police Department, the tag is “pulled” to
get the name and address of the owner, and a “soft letter” goes out politely
requesting that the owner or driver obey the law and respect his neighbors.
A “soft letter” carries no fine or penalty.
You can remain anonymous when you file your report. The only restrictions
are that the car must have a Florida tag and the noise must be heard within
the St. Petersburg City limits. Provide as much information as you can about
the car make, model and color, and the sex, age and race of the driver. But
get this information safely – do not take risks to get it.
